Disagreeing with the CEO

In Norway, you can disagree with your CEO in a meeting. It is expected. It signals engagement.

In many Asian business cultures, open disagreement with a senior, especially in front of others, is deeply uncomfortable. It is not cowardice. It is respect.

The consequences of misreading this? Norwegian managers who think their Asian colleagues are passive. Asian team members who think Norwegian managers are disrespectful.

Neither is true. Both are operating by the rules they were taught.

Cross-cultural leadership is about knowing which rulebook is in play - and being flexible enough to switch.

Strategy is Subtraction

"We want to grow 30% this year." - Goal.

"We will grow 30% by entering the industrial segment with our existing portfolio, prioritising three verticals where we already have reference cases, and hiring one dedicated sales resource for that segment." - Strategy.

A goal tells you where you want to go. A strategy tells you how you'll get there - and why that path beats the alternatives.

Most leadership teams are excellent at setting goals. Far fewer are willing to make the choices that strategy requires: saying no to some markets, some customers, some opportunities.

Strategy is subtraction as much as addition.

The Reality of Complex Deals

A €10M contract doesn't close in one meeting. It rarely closes in five.

Complex B2B sales - the kind involving technical specifications, multiple stakeholders, EPC partners, and 12-month decision cycles - require a different mindset than transactional selling.

Three things that actually move large deals forward:

  1. Getting into the process early (FEED phase, not tender phase)
  2. Mapping every stakeholder, not just your contact
  3. Making it easy for your champion to sell internally

The biggest mistake I see? Sales reps who only talk to the people who will talk to them.

Bilingual in Communication Styles

Norwegians are among the most direct communicators in the world. This is a superpower. At home.

Abroad, it can read as cold, dismissive, or even rude. Especially in cultures where the relationship must come before the transaction.

I've seen Norwegian executives lose deals in Asia and Latin America not because their product was wrong, but because they skipped the small talk, got straight to the agenda, and wondered why the room went quiet.

The fix isn't to be fake. It's to be bilingual in communication styles. Direct when the culture expects it. Relational when it doesn't.

This is a learnable skill. And it pays for itself on the first international deal.

Strategy is a Decision Filter

Most strategy documents are too long, too vague, and forgotten by Q2.

Here is the format we use at Stormberry with clients:

  • Where are we now? Honest assessment; strengths, real weaknesses.
  • Where do we want to be? Specific, time-bound.
  • How will we get there? 3 strategic moves, not 12.
  • What will we NOT do? This is the hardest and most important line.
  • How will we know we're winning? 2-3 measurable signals.

One page. Shared with everyone. Revisited quarterly.

Strategy is not a document. It's a decision filter.

The Reality of Direct Communication

When I moved from Brazil to Norway, I thought I understood direct communication. I was wrong.

In Brazil, "direct" means I'll tell you what I think, but wrapped in warmth, context, and relationship. In Norway, direct means: here is the fact. Full stop.

Neither is better. But misreading one for the other can cost you a deal, a partnership, or a team member.

High-context cultures (Japan, Brazil, much of the Middle East) communicate through implication, relationship, and what is NOT said. Low-context cultures (Norway, Germany, Netherlands, USA) communicate explicitly: what is said is what is meant.

The skill is knowing which room you're in.

What is Strategy?

A budget is not a strategy. A revenue target is not a strategy. "Growing 20% next year" is not a strategy.

Strategy answers one question: How will we win?

It defines where you will play, how you will beat competitors, and what capabilities you need to build. Everything else is just execution.

The Nuances of Global Feedback

As we wind down our first official week, here are a few thoughts from Marcos on the realities of cross-cultural communication:

The cultural nuances of feedback are fascinating. Having delivered training courses globally, I’ve encountered regions where participants consistently give perfect 100% scores, whilst in other cultures, achieving anything above an 80% is practically impossible!

I personally find it most actionable when people provide specific observations alongside concrete suggestions for improvement. That said, I've learned to appreciate that what feels 'constructive' is heavily shaped by our cultural background :)

After 40 days of fasting, penance, prayer, and reflection during Lent, we now enter the 50 days of Easter: a season of joy, hope, and victory, passing through the glory of the Ascension and culminating in Pentecost.

As we contemplate the mystery of the Resurrection, I’m reminded of St. Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians (1 Cor 5:7), echoed in the Easter sequence:
